HADITH ON URINATING WHILE STANDING (The Dynamics of Urinals in Urban Society)
Keywords:
Hadith, Urination, Science and Socio-Cultural Approaches, Takhrij al-HadithAbstract
This study aims to examine and reconstruct the understanding of Muslim scholars regarding the ruling on men urinating in a standing position, which has often been perceived as prohibited (haram). Differences in the interpretation of hadiths concerning the ethics of urination reveal the dynamic relationship between normative teachings and socio-cultural contexts. This research employs a library-based (library research) approach integrating hadith studies, scientific, and socio-cultural perspectives. The analysis uses the maudhu‘i (thematic) method combined with takhrij al-hadith to trace relevant traditions through the Maktabah Syamilah application. The findings indicate that the hadiths on urination while standing are authentic (sahih) and non-contradictory. The narration of ‘Aishah (ra) describes the Prophet’s habit of urinating while sitting, whereas the narration of Hudhaifah (ra) allows the practice under specific circumstances. Jurisprudentially, the act is deemed makruh (disliked) but not sinful if done due to valid reasons (‘udzur). From a health perspective, squatting is preferable as it facilitates complete bladder emptying. Therefore, urinating in a standing position may be permitted within certain modern contexts, provided that cleanliness, health, and Islamic etiquette are maintained.
